The latter has potential to resurface in plots to come. Now I immediately thought why am I seeing a fictional mythology being mixed in here and thankfully the author addresses this by having their power or decline of it be proportional to the decline of people being aware of said mythos, which makes perfect sense as this mythos has always been one of the more underused ones despite it's relevance.īut the real success of using this mythos is that it allowed the author to flesh out kaguya while also reminding us of the potential danger of diva possession that isn’t immediately apparent. Also ride the lightning has now been dubbed as her theme song as I now can’t say her signature ability “Ride Lightning” without thinking of that song.Īnd speaking of Metallica references, the call of ktulu came on my iPod while reading the twist that headmaster otonashi was possessed by the faceless god himself, Nyarlathotep of the cthulhu mythos. I just love how in letting a supposed fugitive go so he can prove his innocence and in turn continue to train with her she strikes a fine balance between tomboy and shy sweetheart. So right before the gang investigates the cave under witch mansion we run into hikari again and boy did I miss her. I think what I liked best about her development is that once it was done, she didn’t default back to the indifferent act and immediately push things forward, which put a huge smile on my face during bonding with kazuki at the end(another lewd face goes here). This gave her backstory more weight to me as she has genuine reason for her cold personality in that she had no one in her life. The others also get fleshed out despite getting comparatively less page time, which is not by a wide margin.Ģ while the kuudere aspect of koyuki being the result of tragedy is not new ground, I appreciate that koyuki isn’t a kuudere + childhood friend or a kuudere with a sibling. Even though we get her entire backstory fleshed out, the author manages to do this without writing the other haremettes out of the scenes for the most part. However, there are two things I have to point out regarding her focus.ġ at no point did I feel like her development overwhelmed the development of others throughout the novel. So as you would have guessed from the cover, this volume is a koyuki volume. Now throw in some international differences with neutral sides that employ one or both philosophies and you have a potential shit-storm looming ahead in the long term.

The bias between swordsman and mages has even the divas themselves taking sides, with some being on the fence. The discussion with leme, Prometheus and yutta no kami really does illustrate how complexes the mythical situation is even on a local level. Instead, the author says “hey, remember how kazuki is an illegal magician not contracted with the 72 pillar? Well he’s not the only one or even the first one within the academy”. With a lot of series, the special attributes of the MC rarely show up with other characters even though it’s within the realm of possibility. The reveal and introduction of the second “illegal” magician within the knight order, kazuha, was a logical conclusion addressed much earlier than these types of novels usually address it. It getting so out of hand that koyuki had to sleep between them was hilarious.

It’s easy to get bored while being confined to one room but boy does lotte know how to party for a loli (insert lewd face here).

To allow things to settle down a bit, we get some harem antics with kazuki, mio and lotte, with koyuki being the mom/voice of reason. But that didn’t stop the author from having a suspenseful fight in which even though kohaku had hax swords, kanae still had her on the ropes through raw skill and ability. With the president position being decided via duel, kohaku had to win in order to prevent kanae from snooping around and finding kazuki. Kanae v Kohaku was hype in that it allowed both of them to look good while also giving insight on how things work within the sword division. I definitely appreciated that the author didn’t waste time showing us the fallout from last volume it gave the events a strong sense of continuity in that it screams “shit hit the fan last volume and we’re keeping the momentum up instead of letting things settle with a time skip”.Īnd that’s where the first fight of the volume adheres to this philosophy. So the novel immediately picks up where things left off last volume as we see kazuki, mio, lotte and koyuki in a secret room within the sword division thanks to the efforts of “this one” aka kohaku.
